5 Reasons to Keep a Journal

As a generation who is in love with scrolling through Pinterest, perfecting Instagram grids, and blogging our hearts out, it seems as though keeping a journal might be a little outdated. However, journalling can be seen as a timeless hobby with a multitude of benefits for the one who holds the pen.

Here’s a list of five reasons why journaling is a pastime that you should pick up.

It clears your mind.

It’s no secret that our brains are consuming more information than ever before. With technology at the touch of our fingertips and the convenience of Google being just a click away, our minds are working hard to keep up. By the end of the day, journaling is the best way to give your brain the much needed break it deserves by slowing down and taking time to write it out.

It allows you to reflect.

How many times a day do you truly bask in the luxury of personal reflection? Fortunately, journaling grants the gift of reflection every time your pen touches the paper. This reflection has no limits; you can ponder ideas bigger than yourself, contemplate new areas of growth, or even take a moment to evaluate the places you ate that day. Perhaps one of the best parts of meditating on your day is that you gain a greater understanding of self, which is a gift that keeps on giving!

It allows you to set goals.

A big plus of journaling is that it allows you to set goals. Journaling is a great place to set visual goals for yourself each day, each month, each year, and so on. By writing your goals out, you’re more likely to stay focused and not stray from what you desire to accomplish. Having a physical list of items to accomplish allows your goals to remain at the forefront of your mind.

It tracks your growth.

Nothing is more rewarding than looking back on how far you’ve come. By keeping a daily journal, you enable yourself to capture every milestone accomplished and every low that was hit. Journaling can be used as a tool to track progress in all areas of life– work, school, personal goals and everything in between!

It keeps you grateful.

As journaling becomes routine, it truly becomes a daily indulgence. By creating the habit of spilling your day’s worth of thoughts on paper, it grants the gift of gratefulness. To have a concrete place to store your thoughts, worries, and hopes for the future, a person is able to realize just how sweet the gift of life is, and that it’s something we should never take for granted.
