Just before the holiday break I was asked to shoot a centuries old bakery in the centre of Delft that has recently changed hands to a charming couple, Thomas van Bavel and Patrick van Holsteijn, who are energetic and passionate about their line of work and the craft behind baking. The bakery has been around since the sixteenth century and it’s new owners are keen to breath fresh life into it while maintaining it’s nostalgic and historical charm.
I created a series of images for the new website, created by the lovely Merel de Neve, who I hired to rebrand my blog recently – both of the bakery itself and their staff, as well as the products. And yes, I ate a LOT of carbs that week. And yes, it was worth it.
It’s always fun to challenge yourself to do new things and this shoot was certainly that! Shooting interiors, my subjects don’t often move but in a bakery it’s fast paced and you have split seconds to capture the moment so it’s entirely different and I had a lot of fun creating these images for them.
If you’re in Delft and are looking for fresh baked goods, pop into Bakkerij De Diamanten Ring on the Choorstraat. As I am not much of a baker myself, I often have them create sponge cake bases that I take home to decorate for parties. It’s cheating a bit but they’re so good at it and I’m pretty good at decorating so it works really well!
In other news, I spent all last week in bed with the flu, so I am playing catch up BIG time. Then this week I hosted 11 amazing women for the photography and styling workshop I’m running with Hanke Arkenbout and just like that, my energy came back! I’ll share more about the day soon (and announce new dates for March!) but if you look at #inspiresessions over on Instagram you’ll see some of the beautiful snaps our students created during the day. So much talent in one space! So in light of being inspired and having the courage to shoot and share your images, this is my offering for the time being.
